Pension and tax return 2026 – what do you have to declare?

📅 Updated: April 2026 ⏱ Reading time: 6 minutes ✍ Belastinghulp Zaanstad

Do you receive a supplementary pension in addition to your AOW? Then you have to declare this on your tax return. But which pensions are exactly taxed, what's on your annual statement and when can you get money back? We explain it step by step for retirees in Zaanstad.

Which pensions do you have to declare?

In the Netherlands, most pension payments are taxed. You declare the following income in box 1:

Type of pensionTaxed?Where to find
AOW payment (SVB)YesSVB annual statement
Supplementary employee pensionYesPension fund annual statement
Annuity paymentYes (if premium was deductible)Insurer annual statement
Survivor's pension (ANW)YesSVB annual statement
Annuity from own contribution (not deductible)No (already taxed)Don't declare

The annual statement from your pension fund

Every pension fund sends you an annual statement each year. It shows:

  • Wages — your gross pension payment over the year
  • Withheld payroll tax — the tax already withheld
  • Tax credit applied? — yes or no (important for tax return)
  • Payroll tax number — unique number of the pension fund

Note: If both the SVB and your pension fund apply the tax credit, too little tax has been withheld. You may then have to pay extra. Ask your pension fund to stop applying it.

Multiple pension funds

Have you worked for multiple employers and therefore have multiple pension funds? Then you receive multiple annual statements. You have to combine all this income in your tax return. The Belastingdienst then calculates the total amount owed and settles what has already been withheld.

The more income sources, the bigger the chance of a back-payment or refund. We help you make this clear.

Deductions for retirees

Despite having a pension income, there are various deductions that reduce your tax:

  • Healthcare costs deduction — personal contributions WLZ/WMO, dentist, aids, diet on doctor's advice
  • Donations deduction — periodic donations to charities (ANBI) are fully deductible
  • Remaining mortgage interest — if you still have a (small) mortgage
  • Partner alimony — if you pay alimony

Tax credits with pension

As a retiree you are entitled to several tax credits:

CreditAmount 2026

◆ Frequently asked questions

Questions about pension and tax return

Yes. Supplementary pension (employee pension) and annuity payments are taxed in box 1, just like your AOW. Your pension fund withholds payroll tax and gives you an annual statement.

The annual statement shows your gross pension income, the withheld payroll tax and whether the tax credit has been applied. You need this information for your tax return.

You receive an annual statement from each fund. All pension income added together forms your total box 1 income. The Belastingdienst calculates the tax owed on the total and settles what has already been withheld.

Yes, if at multiple income sources (SVB + pension fund) the tax credit has been applied. Then too little tax has been withheld. You can ask the pension fund not to apply the tax credit.

As a retiree you can deduct healthcare costs (dentist, personal contributions, aids), donations to charities (ANBI) and remaining mortgage interest from your income.

The deadline for the income tax return is 1 May of the year after the tax year. For 2025 that is 1 May 2026. Requesting an extension is possible until 1 September.
