📅 Updated: April 2026 ⏱ Reading time: 6 minutes ✍ Belastinghulp Zaanstad

The deadline for the tax return over 2025 is 1 May 2026. That means you only have a few weeks left to submit your tax return. Haven't got round to it yet? No panic – in this guide you'll read exactly what the deadline means, what happens if you file late, and how we can arrange your tax return quickly and correctly for you. Fixed price €59.

When is the deadline for tax return 2025?

The official deadline for the income tax return for tax year 2025 is Thursday 1 May 2026. This is the latest date by which your tax return must be received by the Belastingdienst (Dutch tax authority), unless you have applied for an extension.

SituationDeadline
Standard personal tax return1 May 2026
Extension applied for (yourself)1 September 2026
Tax return via tax adviser (beconregeling)1 May 2027
Tax return from abroad (C-form)1 July 2026
Tax return for deceased (F-form)8 months after death

Note: Have you submitted your tax return before 1 April 2026? Then the Belastingdienst (Dutch tax authority) is required to respond before 1 July 2026. If you submit later, it can take months before you receive a notification about a refund.

Why is this deadline so important?

Filing late has immediate financial consequences. The Belastingdienst automatically imposes a default penalty if you still have not filed a tax return after 1 May 2026 and have not applied for an extension.

  • First default: fine from €385
  • Repeated default: fine up to €5,514
  • Intentional non-filing: offence penalty up to 100% of the tax owed

In addition to the fine, you may also have to pay tax interest if you owe tax. In 2026 the tax interest is 6.5% per year and starts from 1 July 2026.

What should you do now?

Depending on your situation there are three options:

Your situationWhat to do
I have time and knowledgeFile the tax return yourself via Mijn Belastingdienst with DigiD
I need more timeApply for an extension (free, until 1 September 2026)
I want it taken off my plateLet us handle it – we arrange everything for €59

This is how to apply for an extension: Log in to Mijn Belastingdienst → go to "Personal details" → click on "Apply for extension". You can do this up to and including 1 May 2026. The extension then runs until 1 September 2026.

Did you not get round to it? No DigiD? Or not sure if you have everything correct? We handle it for you — quickly and correctly. Even close to the deadline we can still file your tax return.

How we work:

  2. Home visit or digital meeting — you choose whichever you prefer
  3. We collect the data — annual statements, WOZ, bank details
  4. Tax return submitted — within a few days, well on time
  5. You receive a copy — plus a clear overview of your refund or payment

Working via a power of attorney? No DigiD? No problem. We can also file your tax return via an official authorisation. You don't need to log in yourself.

What if I have missed the deadline?

Did you miss 1 May 2026? Don't wait any longer. The Belastingdienst first sends a reminder and then a warning. If you don't respond, the Belastingdienst (Dutch tax authority) will estimate your income themselves — often to your disadvantage — and you will receive an assessment that is usually higher.

Good news: you can file a tax return up to 5 years back. Filing sooner prevents higher fines and ensures you still receive any refund. We also help with late tax returns and corrections of old years.

Questions about the tax return 2025 deadline

The deadline for the income tax return for 2025 is 1 May 2026. This applies to individuals without an extension. Via a tax adviser (beconregeling) it can be extended until at the latest 1 May 2027.

You first receive a reminder and then a warning. If you don't respond, you will be given a default penalty starting from €385 for a first default and up to €5,514 for repeated defaults. You also pay 6.5% tax interest from 1 July 2026 on any tax owed.

You can apply for an extension for free via Mijn Belastingdienst with your DigiD. You have to do this before 1 May 2026. The extension then runs until 1 September 2026. Don't have a DigiD? We can also arrange it for you via an authorisation.

Yes. Even shortly before the 1 May deadline we can handle your tax return. Get in touch via WhatsApp or phone and we'll schedule an appointment within 24 hours. Most tax returns are filed within 2 to 5 working days.

You have to file a tax return if you have received a tax return letter from the Belastingdienst (Dutch tax authority). Even without a letter, filing can pay off, for example if you have healthcare costs, donations, mortgage interest or other deductions. Seniors often get hundreds of euros back via the elderly tax credit.

Our standard tax return costs €59 all-in. We also check whether you are entitled to benefits, tax credits and deductions. For more complex situations (e.g. first home, business owner) other rates apply.
